Referring your patients to Emerald
When you send a patient our way, it's a signal of trust — one we take seriously. Our referring providers are partners and collaborators in care.

Referring to Emerald
When you refer a patient for treatment, your confidence in a partner can help create an immediate sense of trust — making it easier for patients to take the next step in their care.
Here’s how the referral process works for Emerald partners and what you can expect moving forward.
1
Evaluate Your Patient
Discuss your patient's needs and determine:
- Reason for referral
- Services you're requesting (medication management, therapy, both, or specialized services)
- Urgency, if relevant
2
Submit Your Referral
Most referring providers submit through their electronic records systems by searching for Emerald Psychiatry.
You can also email us at this link or fax your referral to (614) 368-1357.

Which Patients Should You Refer?
In many areas of medicine, it makes sense to try a few approaches before looping in a specialist. In mental health, we consistently find the opposite: Outcomes are better when a specialist is brought in sooner rather than later. If you suspect a mental health diagnosis or issue — even before starting any treatment — it’s always an appropriate time to refer to Emerald.
Refer to Emerald. You don't need to start anything first — earlier specialist involvement can lead to better outcomes than a "try a few things first" approach.
You've tried medications and they aren't working, or you've reached the limit of your comfort.
Refer to Emerald. Whether the medication hasn't achieved stability, the presentation is more complex than expected, or you'd simply feel better with a specialist involved, we're happy to collaborate.
Your patient is stable on a straightforward regimen, and you're comfortable continuing to manage it.
Continue treating internally, but we're here if you need us! A referral is always welcome for ongoing behavioral health support alongside medication.
